Conjunctivitis: Irritating, Uncomfortable, but Completely Manageable

Conjunctivitis, more commonly called pink eye, occurs when the conjunctiva—the clear layer covering the white of the eye and protects the sclera—is irritated and inflamed.

Though conjunctivitis is irritating and painful, most types generally don’t cause vision problems when treated quickly. If you’re experiencing conjunctivitis symptoms, contact Birring Eyecare to find relief.

Conjunctivitis Symptoms

Red or pink-looking eyes are telltale symptoms of conjunctivitis. Other symptoms include:

  • Itching or burning sensation
  • Swollen eyelid(s)
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Excessive tearing
  • Sticky yellow discharge, watery discharge, or stringy discharge

Types of Conjunctivitis

There are many causes of conjunctivitis, but most fall into three types.

Infectious

Infectious conjunctivitis is incredibly contagious. To prevent the spread of your conjunctivitis, it’s important to keep up good hygiene, refrain from touching your eyes, and stay home until you’re well.

Infectious conjunctivitis can be bacterial, which can be treated with antibiotic ointments or eye drops. It can also be viral, which does not respond to antibiotics. Viral conjunctivitis usually runs its course between 7 days to a few weeks.

If you have allergies, you may experience allergic conjunctivitis. This form may be accompanied by sneezing and a running nose. Relief can be found in allergy medication or eye drops.

Chemical conjunctivitis occurs when a chemical irritant enters the eye. For a less dangerous chemical (such as water from a chlorinated pool), rinsing the eyes should clear up the symptoms in a day or so. For more serious chemical irritants, seek treatment as soon as possible.
